I'm rather tired, heading to bed soon, but I had to post real quick. I added this cool new map counter on the TurboCrazy page on Thursday. It is such a neat idea! It maps the location of visitors with little dots on a world map. Check it out!

With the fine help of JonS at home-bartista, I diagnosed the problem with my Expobar and got 'er working again. You could probably hear my exclamations from there. Follow link to read the whole story:

Now that it's working again, it's time for a new machine...right?! LOL. Yeah, bought myself a QuickMill Vetrano. Can't wait to get it all set up.

Seems that I have finally suffered heat damage to my reliable Stir Crazy. It lasted a full year and a half with the original plastic shaft on the motor. I only replaced the nut with a metal washer and wingnut. However, the heat over that time has broken it down. Time to do a full metal replacement.

Wow, I am an enormous flake. Seriously. Adding to a blog can't be much easier and yet it has been more than six months six my last entry. So here's an entry. It may not be much, but since very few people ever actually read my blog....plus I just haven't quite know what to blog about. I am planning to update the TurboCrazy site when I have the time to include info on the new UFO option. If you have no idea what I am talking about, then you will just have to wait!

Wow, June 1st. And my last entry was March? Shame. Too little time, too much coffee.

Topic of the day: just how much good coffee?
This is a big world and many, many people in it drink coffee. From comments on the co-op, I know that America tends to get lousy coffee. The supplier of the finest coffees is small and the demand is high, especially from buyers in countries that demand excellence from their coffee and truly understand the difference. Most Americans still believe that Starbucks offers the pinnacle of coffee excellence! So, my thought for this morning is just how much great coffee is out there that I have never and will never taste?

I made a new "Woz's Chaff Ejection System" ring for a dude at the co-op today. I had to test it and make sure it worked okay ;) So I roasted up some Zambian. Took it to the first snaps of second. Hope you enjoy the shot.

Smells Like Toast?

I roasted 12 ounces or so of Ethiopian Harrar on Monday. I've been experimenting with preheating lately. A five minute preheat at 250 F shortened the roast by several minutes. I reached the virge of second in 12 minutes or so.

The next day, my neighbor was walking by and asked if I had been roasting the day before. I thought and responded that I had. She said, "every once in a while I smell toast and I wonder if you are roasting coffee." I dunno. I never thought the smell of roasting coffee was anything like toast.

Five Pounds in Two Hours

Yesterday, I roasted 6 batches back to back. Whew! A full five pounds, or maybe a little more, by the time I was done. I am roasting Honduran Organic SHG Marcala for holiday gifts for my colleagues at work. For the first time, I tried two full cups in each batch and the roast was very even and consistent. The warmed up rig shaved 2-3 minutes off the total roast time for each consecutive roast. I took it to the first snaps of second. I was pleased to have no problems raosting back to back. Nothing melted! No catastrophes! I need to do it again before Friday, then again this weekend.

I am very pleased at the reception my Turbo Crazy website has received from the community. I will be putting up another shot of a stir arm mod soon. Updates will include a little info on using a variac with the TO.

I think I may also use this blog to post roasting notes. Last Sunday's roast of Malabar Gold has been delicious. I am thinking I will roast some Sumatra or Tanzania PB this weekend. I enjoy these two and have grown quite familiar with their flavors roasted in the i-Roast. I am wondering if i will be able to detect flavor differences roast in the Turbo Crazy.

Man, it took more work than I expected to get my coffee roasting website built. My goal was to consolidate a bunch of info I found related to building and maintaining a Turbo Crazy coffee roaster. I hope I did a good job. I am planning to put my new roaster to good use as the holidays are approaching by roasting a lot of beans for gifts.
